The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
