RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
