The Labour leader is confronting backbench anger after ministers dropped proposals to give workers immediate safeguards against wrongful termination, a U-turn that breaches the party's election pledges.
MPs including a previous cabinet member who headed the labor reform proposal raised objections over the climbdown declared by ministers.
Cabinet members have removed the proposal to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to file wrongful termination cases and enable them to proceed beginning day one in a new job, in an attempt to pass the proposed law through government.
The legislation became trapped in a standoff between peers and MPs regarding the initial proposal to offer labor protections on day one, along with provisions to ban "exploitative" zero-hours contracts.
Ministers currently plan to establish the protection over unfair dismissal after six months of service instead, although additional first-day entitlements to paternity leave and health-related payments continue planned to go ahead, coming into effect in spring 2026.
The Labour MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East labeled the action as a "complete betrayal" and pledged to advocate for its reversal.
"We must oppose that compromise solution."
"This is a wrong-headed move and I plan to fight to reverse this让æ¥."
An additional parliamentarian expressed frustration concerning inadequate dialogue, stating: "There has been zero consultation with the PLP. Peers shouldn't override regarding election promises, therefore why did we surrender??"
Another representative commented: "Employers have nothing to fear regarding first-day entitlements, however laborers face significant risks from businesses who doesn't want day-one rights."
The former employment minister confirmed that the decision "clearly represents a pledge violation."
The learning department head stated existed a "genuine possibility" the execution of the worker protection legislation might have faced postponement had the administration not implemented a U-turn over first-day rights against wrongful termination.
"Consultation has occurred concerning the matter about unfair dismissal and the duration requirement with employers, trade unions and ministers, and after those talks understanding has been reached regarding the path ahead, that represents positive development."
The secretary highlighted that "This indicates the qualifying period will decrease from two years to six months, and that runs alongside important day-one rights concerning illness compensation and concerning childbirth absence."
"Yet the threat existing without forward movement, those significant entitlements wouldn't come into force from April next year."
Upon being asked regarding if it constituted a broken promise, the official replied: "Throughout the campaign document, what we said was that we planned to cooperate with trade unions, with business, with civil society, through dialogue regarding such entitlements we planned to introduce."
"So, there are both parts to that, throughout the campaign document, the important rights and the dialogue."
